Time-domain tailored-pulse laser enables scribing of CIGS solar modules
Matt Rekow, Richard Murison, PyroPhotonics Lasers, a subsidiary of ESI, Inc, Montreal, QC, Canada
Laser scribing is an enabling process for the formation of monolithic series interconnects for large panel thin film solar cells. Interconnect formation typically requires three scribing operations known in the industry as P1, P2 and P3. A fourth operation, often referred to as P4, removes shunts at the edges and prepares the module for electrical interconnect and encapsulation. Laser scribe processes based on nanosecond (ns) pulsed lasers are preferred for both a-silicon and CdTe thin film PV manufacturing. CIGS (copper indium gallium selenide) is a different story. In this case, the shunt and series resistance of laser processed modules suffers unacceptably due to thermal degradation when traditional ns pulse lasers are used.
Success has been claimed utilizing picosecond (ps) lasers for CIGS P2 and P3, however, negative thermal effects still cannot be avoided as is evident in Fig. 2a. Furthermore, such lasers are much more expensive, much larger and considered far less industrially robust than ns lasers. Consequently, they have yet to gain broad acceptance across the solar industry. Because of these concerns, mechanical stylus scribing continues to be the industry norm for CIGS P2 and P3 scribing.
The tailored-pulse laser
The invention of a new type of fiber laser has enabled discovery and exploitation of a previously unknown process window for the CIGS P2 and P3 process. The laser is a 1064nm pulse programmable fiber laser [1]. Unlike more traditional lasers, this laser technology allows the pulse duration to be varied from approximately two to several 100s of nanoseconds, independent of the laser repetition rate, which can be varied up to 500kHz. In addition, each pulse can be arbitrarily programmed to generate a specific desired temporal profile of instantaneous laser power. Pulse trains comprised of these shaped pulses can be applied to the scribing process at high repetition rates. It is precisely these attributes that are not available in Q-switched or ps lasers that enable this novel and effective process.

High School Eco-Team scores solar panel grant
The high school is driving towards a greener future with a new grant to harness the sun.
Led by the school's Eco-Team, the Haliburton Highlands Secondary School is adding their first solar panel to power their field scoreboard after receiving approval for a Green Apple School Program grant worth $1,000.
This is an initiative funded by Metro to encourage students to participate in the development of a healthier environment.
Eco-Team member and project leader Puru Shah, who has been with the team for two years, said this was a group effort that included his president Vicky Bukta and school advisor Amy Klose to address the complication of powering the field's scoreboard.
This is a legacy project that can serve as an example to the school and the community, he said.
"It's a good initiative to show the students that we can do something green," he said. "It's a challenge for next year and the year after to say, 'top this.'" The balance of the project exceeded the grant total and the school approved to cover the $200 shortfall. This grant program is expected to award up to $1 million to schools.
For next year, the Grade 11 student said, the team is considering a garden in the courtyard, which will grow herbs and vegetables to supply the school's food course.
Although Shah completed the necessary grant paperwork over the course of a couple of days, he downplays his efforts and defers credit to his president and school advisor.
Eco-Team president Vicky Bukta is interested in improving things at her school and the environment.
"Right now our scoreboard is very hard to use since the battery that runs it only lasts about 30 minutes, which is nowhere near the length of a full soccer or football game," she said. "Having the scoreboard run on its own would be great for future sport games we have on the field. At the same time we are helping the environment by having it run on its own with a solar panel," she said.
The Grade 11 student has been part of the eco-team for two years, joining mid-way through Grade 9.
Since the autumn of 2009, the Green Apple School Program has awarded hundreds of $1,000 grants to elementary and high schools in Ontario and Quebec.

Green Mountain Energy sets up solar leasing program
Green Mountain Energy Company in Texas is betting that people are interested enough in solar to pay more for it than for traditional grid power.
The company launched a solar leasing program this week that will allow people to buy into a 20-year lease of solar panels for their residential roofs. The goal is to provide a lower-cost option, with no upfront investment to people who are keen on getting green power.
There's just one catch. The solar lease will cost more than grid power.
The Dallas Morning News reported that an average-size 4-kilowatt array will cost a customer $100 a month and will produce about 450 kilowatt hours of electricity. At current rates, that power would cost the customer $45 to $50, according to the newspaper.
So are people really willing to pay double for clean energy?
Jason Sears, senior manager of product strategy and marketing for Green Mountain Energy, said people are.
"The folks that are interested in solar aren't just interested in saving money," Sears said. "They're interested because they think solar is the right thing to do, and they want to do the right thing."
Sears said the company has several customers who installed panels on their homes despite a lack of incentives, and they had to pay all the upfront ownership costs.
He said the company has been looking for a way to add a solar panel lease option for quite some time because customers had been asking for it.
"The interest has been great so far," Sears said. "We've had a lot of calls and email from people who want more information and are interested in doing it."
The program can be tailor-made to suite each individual homeowner in that they can pay an even amount throughout the lease or arrange to have it start low and gradually increase, Sears said.
Also, in the event a homeowner leases an array that produces more power than the owner uses, Green Mountain Energy buys it back at the same rate customers pay for power as part of the utility's Renewables Rewards program.
"We have one of the most generous rewards programs out there," Sears said.
While the lease program is double the regular price now, Sears said he believes there is enough momentum behind solar to drive people to the leases.
"We're really excited about the lease program," he said. "We really believe it's the most accessible and affordable way for more people to go solar."

In the interests of the Hungarians
The Hope Movement for Hungarian break point may be the next election - said László Balint, president of MRM in the political organization of the presentation of Zenta, which was held Saturday afternoon at the Lakeside-Centar tanácstermében local community. The party chairman said that the MRM is designed to specifically mérettesse himself alone in these elections. Laszlo Balint noted in this context also that the Serbian political parties are not departing for the joint list, the Hungarian Coalition Party, which is the last Óbecse meeting in which representatives of the MRM does not invited, denounced the party, and ruled out the possibility that this be a member of the coalition.
- Our goal is that where there are communal organizational or will be in our party to government representatives, and at least one representative of the Republic of Hungary to the Hope Movement - the party's plans for achieving this goal Laszlo Balint, who Senta meeting also stressed the necessity to a generation of political and scope should be given a clean history to people who are genuinely committed towards the Hungarians.

Definitely fun!
The summer programs are Senta in all aspects of the Summer Youth Games can be highlighted by July this year to 19-23. is held on the Volksgarten. There are many people who have already made a major event and even more people who believe that it would not be true in the summer for youth games without. That is what we can expect this year visitors to the festival, Tajti Attila, chief of the events talked about.
You were the second time this year the festival organizing team lead. What are the things that have worked during the festival last year and so this year will be a part of events, however, are those that do not really come in and rewrite it so?
- Be a good mood and the safety of visitors to the festival, which is excellently played the field last year, I think. The mood in ensuring young people play a large role in the bands is an experience, so we tried to color this year is the musical lineup. It also takes into account that the bands seen in games which visitors welcome, and feel free to say that this year they can pick you up at the performers, most of which were requested. The big surprises csapatversennyel also prepare, but Palatine Brigitta, the main organizer of the team asked me to keep secret for the time being. In team sports you can say in relation to the points of contact in any event the jótékonykodással too! The camping opportunities will continue in the usual way we solve. Improved sanitation facilities to more civil society organizations began to negotiate. The basic conditions are met. Every year, more mobile toilets arrived on the scene. They are kept clean for sure there will be no complaints. The toilet needs to the greatest extent possible we try to satisfy this connection, discussions are ongoing. With respect to safety also say that I have very good co-founded the event and the police. This continued. The police are so closely related to the safety our organization, it works so well that a 16 000-year event, attended only 1 full week during a brawl occurred.
It is very important that the parents can rest assured if they know that their child is safe in most of the Summer Youth Games. The biggest change is part of the cultural events happening soon, this is more guests have access to information. In addition, there will be a different day programs, we karszalaghamisítóknak is no chance!
The events of the festival in addition to the elderly and the young parents with small children also lelátogatnak. What recreational opportunities designed for them?
- Of course, everyone needs to be addressed, such as families. The children are also free programs this year, we look forward to kölyöktanyán, and the older age groups will also have programs. Welcomes everyone to the Folk Music Tent, where people of all ages can feel good, and is planning to Summer School. In addition, performers will be satisfactory for all ages, including Damian Francis and the Republik, which is also popular among the elderly.
