Painter David Hockney has criticised the likes of Damien Hirst, saying artists should create their own work.
Yorkshire-born Hockney, 74, whose major exhibition of landscapes opens at the Royal Academy this month, told the Radio Times that it was "insulting" for an artist to employ others to make their creations.

Asked if he was having a dig at Hirst, famous for covering a human skull with 8,601 flawless diamonds and suspending a shark in formaldehyde, Hockney nodded and said: "It's a little insulting to craftsmen, skilful craftsmen."
He added: "I used to point out at art school, you can teach the craft, it's the poetry you can't teach. But now they try to teach the poetry and not the craft."
Hockney quoted a Chinese saying that to paint "you need the eye, the hand and the heart. Two won't do." "The other great thing they said - I told this to Lucian Freud - is, 'painting is an old man's art'. I like that!," Hockney said.

Hirst has defended using assistants to make his spot paintings, saying that they could do the work better as he found it boring to paint them himself.

Zentai's family disappointed battle continues
The family of Perth man Charles Zentai says an eleventh hour decision by the Federal Government to seek a High Court ruling on their father's long-running extradition battle, is disappointing and frustrating.
The Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor will apply to the High Court for special leave to seek its determination on what constitutes a war crime, before the case can continue.
Mr Zentai, who turns 90 next month, is wanted in Hungary over the murder of a Jewish teenager in 1944 and has fought his extradition since 2005.
The Federal Court had previously ruled that Mr Zentai could not be surrendered to Hungary, because war crimes were not a criminal offence under Hungarian law in 1944.
The Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor says it raises a significant issue for Australia's extradition regime.
Mr Zentai's son Ernie Steiner says his father, an Australian citizen, should not be used to resolve the government's extradition policy.
"There are many people in Hungary who are questioning the tactics and the value in pursuing these types of case when the evidence is so flimsy," he said.
Mr Steiner says he is disappointed the government will not support his father with better representation
"We hope someone will come to my father's aid," he said.
"My father can't afford to spend out anything more on legal costs so it would have to be done within certain constraints; pro bono or for legal aid rates."

And Hugo Chavez of Venezuela says capitalism may have destroyed life on Mars.
REAL ESTATE FALLS, JOBS RISE Mark Thoma says commodity prices are increasing because of world demand. A small-business owner in Georgia is trying not to pass on the cost of high gas prices. Detroit's population declines 25 percent. Existing-home sales fall to the lowest on record. Meredith Whitney, an investment adviser, says, "Unless the government comes out with a 50-year mortgage, this market is in trouble longer term." Gallup's job-creation index is the highest since September 2008. Durable goods orders fall.

The Small Business Savings Account Act makes its way through Congress.
