Second Annual JumpStart Kansas

The Kansas City,Professionals with the job title Mold Maker are on LinkedIn. Kan., high school student was one of 10 finalists in the second annual JumpStart Kansas competition at McPherson College. Following the final pitch presentations on Feb. 13 (which just happened to also be her birthday) Onstott found out she was one of two grand prize winners, along with Brandon Mackie of Coffeyville, Kan.

"The most important thing was getting my passion across," Onstott said. "I have a solution to a very real problem."

The annual Jump Start Kansas competition - created and hosted by McPherson College - awards as the top prizes two grants of $5,000 to the two Kansas high school students who present the best entrepreneurial ideas. One grant is for the area of commercial entrepreneurship and one is for social entrepreneurship. What's more, the grants come with no stipulation that the high school students attend McPherson College.

The grand prize winners are also offered a $5,A ridiculously low price on this All-Purpose solar lantern by Gordon.000 annual scholarship to MC. The other eight finalists are offered a $1,000 annual scholarship to MC, which is increased to $1,500 annually if they also pursue the Transformative Entrepreneurship Minor when they attend the college. In addition, these students can receive $500 for their idea from the college's micro-grant "Horizon Fund" if they attend.

In total, McPherson College puts more than $100,000 on the line every year just to encourage the development of young entrepreneurs.

Onstott won the grand prize in the commercial category. She started her five-minute presentation by explaining plainly how uncomfortable she was - and not just because she was pitching for $5,000 with a speech she'd been up to 2 a.m. writing. It was also because of the clothes she was wearing.

Onstott went on to explain that standard bras are made based on only two standard measurements - cup and band - and all mass-produced bras assume symmetry. But that's only true for 10 percent of bra customers, she said, and the other 90 percent of these women are left either resorting to a poor, uncomfortable fit or spending hundreds of dollars on a custom bra.

Her solution was "Build a Better Bra Boutique." The general concept is similar to the "Build-A-Bear Workshop" business, except instead of customizing a Teddy bear, Onstott's customers would use a computerized system to order a bra to exact specifications. Trained employees would help measure and guide customers through the process.

"This is something that is close to my own heart and something I've been struggling with," Onstott said.Which Air purifier is right for you?

The grant will help her learn more about the process of bra-making and help her begin setting up essential aspects of her business.

In the social entrepreneurship category, Brandon Mackie came away with the grand prize grant with his concept for an inspirational game called "Highway to Heaven." The playing board is reminiscent of the game "Operation,How cheaply can I build a solar power systems?" where players try to pull out plastic body parts from a cartoon picture of a surgery patient without touching the sides and making a buzzer go off.

But rather than competition, Mackie's game is directed toward spiritual discovery within Christianity, healing sadness and depression, and teaching lessons of love. With a prototype, he showed how the players begin by trying to pull out a "broken heart" object at the beginning, then move along a pathway removing Christian symbols. The "highway" concludes with a "healed heart" and then a cross symbol. When players touch the edges and trigger the buzzer, they draw a card with inspirational quotes or Biblical scripture and the turn moves to the next player.

He proposed a radically different design for a wind turbine to create electricity. Rather than the wind directly turning a turbine blade, it uses a scientific property of fluids and gases called "The Bernoulli Principle." This design uses the wind's energy to pull air from the ground up, turning a turbine along the way. His design is safer for wildlife, has fewer moving parts,Manufactures and supplies laser marker equipment. has no maximum operable wind speed and would be easier to maintain with a generator at ground level.

-Jordyn Lipe, Hutchinson, Kan. - The Joyful Bakery. Lipe has been baking since she could walk, and in more recent days has won prizes and developed loyal customers. Baking is her passion. Already selling her goods by word-of-mouth and a small web presence, she would like to expand the business.

"My dream is to secure a location for my bakery and really get it going," she said.

As she looks for that location, she wants to create a welcoming, calm and comforting atmosphere.

"My purpose in being before you today is to do my best to change the world," she said.

She just might have secured some new fans at the competition, as she offered a taste of her cupcakes to the judging panel.

-Eric Unruh, Galva, Kan. - Hydrogen Fuel Technology. Unruh would like to work out of his father's mechanic shop to convert gasoline-powered cars to also run on liquid hydrogen, providing a clean alternative to fossil fuels.

"About any vehicle that runs on gas can be made to run on hydrogen," he said.

Along with the conversion, he would also sell small generators to fit in a garage to convert water into hydrogen and oxygen, providing the fuel for the cars.

Leather pushes decorative envelope

Leather is charging into home decor, going beyond couches, chairs and table tops. It's upholstering walls and covering floors, and manufactured materials made from recycled leather are broadening the design possibilities even further.

Imagine a door covered in faux crocodile, a bathroom vanity with a cowhide insert or a closet with leather-wrapped shelves.

Leather produces a sophisticated look suitable for contemporary, rustic or club-like settings, "but not your traditional Colonial home," said Christian Nadeau, president of EcoDomo, a Quebec manufacturer of leather surfacing materials. He said he often sees leather flooring used in media rooms to give a feel of richness and intimacy, but some types can be tough enough for a kitchen or a well-traveled staircase.

Nadeau said leather surfaces have become more popular as interest in natural materials has grown.

"Leather is just one more product that goes in that direction to put nature back in homes," he said.

Leather on surfaces is hardly mainstream, and genuine leather is a home-decorating luxury. But technology is bringing prices down and making this high-end look accessible to customers with bigger design aspirations than budgets.

That's true even with real leather, an option that until now has been prohibitively pricey for most consumers. Kaleen Leathers in Westchester, Ill., for example, is developing genuine-leather panels that manager Frank Mullen said will reduce the cost of leather walls and floors by making them easier and cheaper to install.

The die-cut panels are applied to a rubber backing and then adhered to a wall or floor with a releasable adhesive, much like carpet squares,A ridiculously low price on this All-Purpose solar lantern by Gordon. Mullen said. The backing and the precise die cuts simplify installation, he said, and the low-tack adhesive means you can even take the panels with you if you move.

A 12-by-12-inch panel in an average-range leather might cost $25 to $30, he said - not exactly bargain-basement stuff, but reasonable in comparison to leather-tile prices that can approach or even exceed $100 a square foot.

Finer leathers would cost considerably more, he said. So would larger panels, because they produce less yield from a hide.

Where design inroads really are being made, though, is in surfacing products using recycled or bonded leather, a manufactured product made from leather scraps. Remnants from the manufacture of leather goods are pulverized, and the resulting fibers are mixed with other materials and pressed into sheets that are colored and textured to look like genuine leather. A coating protects the product.

Bonded leather can go wherever wood can - even below grade, in some instances. It's not recommended for wet environments such as full bathrooms.

Ontario flooring company Torlys uses a proprietary protective coating that gives its bonded leather floors a life span of 25 to 30 years with normal wear, said E.C. "Bill" Dearing, its national manager of market development. Torlys' flooring is made from a thin layer of bonded leather applied to high-density fiberboard and backed by cork, so Dearing said it's comfortable underfoot but not spongy. It's a feel much like walking on a wood floor, he said.

EcoDomo's floors have a 25-year residential warranty,Ein innovativer und moderner Werkzeugbau Formenbau. and Nadeau said the company has put them in kitchens, on staircases, in hotel lobbies and in other high-traffic areas.

Maintenance is the same as a wood floor - vacuum without a beater bar to remove dust and damp mop using a floor cleaner, Dearing said.

"But people don't buy it for its wear, honestly," he said. More often, consumers fall in love first with the look,Don't make another silicone mold without these invaluable Mold Making supplies and accessories! he said, and then durability becomes the deciding factor.

Torlys' bonded leather flooring sells for $10 to $13 a square foot; EcoDomo's, for about $12 to $14. Those prices don't include installation.

EcoDomo also makes 4-by-8-foot sheets of bonded leather for the wood industry, for applications such as a veneer on kitchen cabinets, Nadeau said.

One of his favorite uses for bonded leather is in stitched walls, custom fitted to a room. Leather panels are cut to fit around doors,We offers custom Injection Mold parts in as fast as 1 day. switches and other features, and panels are top-stitched for a finished look.

"It looks like your wall was sewn in place," he said.

EcoDomo also makes floor tiles from genuine leather - from the tough leather from the necks of cattle in order to stand up to foot traffic. The process produces a lot of waste, so the product is expensive - around $80 a square foot, he said.

Nadeau sees almost limitless possibilities for leather in the home. He's seen leather-wrapped chandeliers and leather-covered bathroom vanities,Nitrogen Controller and Digital dry cabinet with good quality. and his company has even wrapped toilet seats in leather for yachts and hotels.

Colorfully deforming reality

The Rudolfinum's ongoing exhibition "Butterfly Effect?: The Image as a Multidirectional Deconstruction of the Whole" presents the current work of five Czechs and one Slovak who, through the traditional media of oil and acrylic on canvas, manage to keep classical painting current and even raise its aesthetic value.

"The selection of the artists for this exhibition was not random," Rudolfinum Director Petr Nedoma said. "There are certain connecting points. These painters cross borders and point to what contemporary painting can give us."

The artists whose work is on display - Ji?í Petrbok, Martin Gerboc, Lubomír Typlt, Daniel Pitín, Vladimír Véla and Adam ?tech - have all exhibited in a number of solo and group exhibitions.

"We still live with the feeling of insecurity," Vaňous says. "The fear of what is happening around us is also a main connecting topic at this exhibition. We are not able to identify the causes; we are part of the theory of chaos. The picture is a view of the complex, but the complex is falling into pieces."

Visitors to the Rudolfinum can see six different ways of presenting and deforming reality. For example, Adam ?tech, one of two artists in the exhibition born in 1980, starts with a digital collage compound in a computer from generally known classical paintings and some diverse objects, abstract or details from films.Learn how an embedded microprocessor in a smart card can authenticate your computer usage and data. Then he paints it in oil or mixed media. The results are absurd combinations and incoherent creatures.

Ji?í Petrbok, born in 1962 and the exhibition's senior artist, also uses this idea of creating a new reality by putting different objects together in works painted especially for this exhibition. He set up a new imaginary interior filled with strongly colored sculptures compiled from details from works by artists ranging from the medieval painter Paolo Ucello to the American prankster Jeff Koons to Petrbok's Czech contemporary Kri?tof Kintera. "Some pictures may seem very tragic with the skulls and dragons," Petrbok says. "But I mean it to be more comical. In fact, it is just fun."

The opposite of what can be called fun are the motives for Martin Gerboc's paintings. He reacts to the anachronisms established in our society and to the increasing pseudo-intellectual ballasts by addressing very provocative and open subjects in his art. Gerboc, born 1971, paints pictures full of political and sexual violence,We've had a lot of people asking where we had our make your own bobblehead made. misused religious symbols, criminals, pornography, etc. It doesn't leave the viewer calm; it forces us to think about the content.

In the same room, on the opposite wall,Where you can create a custom lanyard from our wide selection of styles and materials. hang the pictures of Lubomír Typlt, born in 1975. These works show a small baby and little girls,Ein innovativer und moderner Werkzeugbau Formenbau. but they are far from being dispassionate. "I use a contrast of complementary colors,You must not use the laser cutter without being trained." Typlt says. "My aim is to create very aggressive paintings that would drag the viewer inside. It is the same reason for the multiplication of the object. Twelve variations of crying babies' heads should causes some tension."

The next artist in the exhibition is Daniel Pitín, born in 1977 and presenting imaginary interiors here. He specializes in creating nonexistent architectural constructions, reminding the visitor of a theater stage background or even a highly immaterial dream. Pitín plays in a very original way with illusion and reality.

Vladimír Véla, the other artist born in 1980, who opens the exhibition in the first room, works with a big surface covered with color. He remakes chronically known symbols to create a clear picture, open for the viewer.

"Six author-based, conceptually different approaches to an image open up the fundamental question of what the current possibilities of painterly reflection are in today's day and age in the context of the space in which we live - a period that carries within itself a variety of cultural impulses, traces and layers whose origin cannot be easily identified," says Vaňous, the curator. "A period for which the disappearing act of any sort of unity, subliminally perceived as a common security is also symptomatic."

"The Butterfly Effect?" is the second of three consecutive and connected exhibitions at Rudolfinum. The first one was "Beyond Reality. British Painting Today." "The Butterfly Effect?" presents the Czech scene. Next and last will come "Nightfall: New Tendencies in Figurative Painting," which opens March 29 and will present the works of more than 20 artists from nine countries and focus on topics such as social crisis and uncertainty, loneliness, confusion and isolation and the tension between nature and civilization.

Phil Romano is known for creating concepts such as Macaroni Grill, Fuddruckers and eatZi’s Market & Bakery. But recently, he has been creating cutting-edge masterpieces. “I like to create restaurants,” he explained, “so, when I’m not creating restaurants, I’ve got to create something. So, I got a paintbrush and I started painting on canvases.”

Romano and artist J.D. Miller opened the Samuel Lynne Galleries in 2008. The art that is on display is a new movement that Miller created, called Reflectionism. “As Reflectionists,” Miller said, “we have taken it to the 21st Century and we have captured the entire three-dimensional envelope of life. So, not just the light, but sound, taste, touch — the spirit that you’re surrounded by — and translating that into art.”

Legislator's query doesn't make the grade

In the same spirit as the Indiana General Assembly, which seems bent on assigning A to F grades to public schools and labeling teachers, I think it is only fair to give our elected officials letter grades. I am a lifetime public school educator, and I recently had a chance to grade state Rep. Tim Wesco's homework when he sent a survey to my house. After reading his survey, especially those questions regarding teacher unions, I felt that he needed some feedback ... so here is his report card.

I noticed in the question itself, it appears that Wesco copied his work from the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce regarding how the teacher union dues are collected. His premise that union dues are automatically withdrawn without authorization is just wrong! Had Wesco done his research,We've had a lot of people asking where we had our make your own bobblehead made. he would know that there is already a law addressing this issue. This existing law says that a school employer may only deduct professional association dues after having written authorization from the employee.

As an elected lawmaker, Wesco should not jump to conclusions and should work harder to find the facts before making statements.

Unfortunately, Wesco also failed to read and study the existing laws regarding political contributions. If he had done his homework, he would know that not one penny of Indiana State Teachers Association dues is sent to political candidates. If Wesco really wanted to find the truth about PAC money, he would have discovered that ISTA follows the same PAC rules and regulations as other organizations -- including the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce, which is the sole organization behind the dues question in the first place.

It troubles me that, with the serious economic and social issues facing this state and nation, Wesco's devotion in his questionnaire to what amounts to a routine bit of software operations for most school corporations, was more than a little "off topic." He should stick to the subjects he was elected to address, the welfare of Indiana residents.

So, due to the lack of creditability, originality and real effort on his part, I have no choice but to give Wesco the grade for his work -- F.

I hope that every politician learns from this lesson and makes a stronger effort to stay focused on the real issues facing our state, to stop attacking Indiana public school teachers and to not be distracted by special interest groups such as the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce.

No criminal hooliganism in Subotica?

The Hungarian Hope Movement (MRM), Subotica organization noted with indignation Zentai travel around the graveyard and formed states. The ministry staff, MNT, and the Provincial Education Secretary circumventing phone instruct school directors of branches to merge - said Joo Horti, adding to a large extent a class is concerned, for which the MNT, the powers in accordance with the proposed small sections open the Provincial Education Secretary will consent to these sections in the open.

Under the continuity of MNT require that those in the existence of a small department, which recommended the opening of the MNT, and approved by the provincial secretariat, no one can give a question mark - Horti Joo emphasized.

Korhecz Dr. Thomas, chairman of the MNT has expressed disappointment at the recent events, because, he said, Žarko Obradović competent ministry leader pledged last year that it no longer occur in attempts to merge the previously approved sections.
